Choose the right type of sign

Start with what your sign needs to do. A shopfront sign helps people recognise your business from the street, while reception branding, directional signs and window graphics each have a different job. Think about viewing distance, the size of your message and whether people need to read it while walking or driving past.

Shop fascias and tray signs

A fascia presents your name across the front of a building. A flat panel offers a straightforward surface for printed graphics or lettering; a folded tray adds depth and can conceal its supporting structure. The available frontage and mounting surface help determine the format.

Flat cut and built up lettering

Individual flat cut letters create a clean, shaped logo or name. Built up letters have three dimensional sides for a deeper appearance and can be specified with illumination. Letter size, detail and the distance from which the sign will be read influence the design.

Projecting signs and lightboxes

A projecting sign faces people approaching along the street rather than directly towards the building. A lightbox uses an illuminated face to display your message. Position, available space, fixing arrangements and the surrounding environment need reviewing before a specification is agreed.

Graphics, reception and wayfinding

Window and wall graphics can carry branding, opening information or a campaign. Reception signs introduce your business indoors, while wayfinding helps people reach the right place. For floor, safety, tactile or specialist signs, tell us about the intended surface, users and any project requirements.

Materials and finishes

The best material depends on the sign’s location, construction, finish and expected use. Indoor reception lettering and an exposed exterior fascia may need different specifications. These are starting points for discussion; the exact product, thickness, fixings and finish are confirmed for your project.

Common material options for business signage
Material or finishWhere it may suitWhat to discuss
Aluminium composite panelsRigid fascia panels, printed signs and display boards.Panel grade, dimensions, mounting and suitability for the site. Aluminium composite combines metal outer faces with a core; products are not all identical.
AcrylicReception signs, shaped lettering and suitable illuminated faces.Colour, thickness, opacity and whether light needs to pass through. The acrylic grade and lighting design need to work together.
Fabricated metalTray fascias, built up letters and branded features.Depth, weight, surface finish, fixing method and exposure. Painted, coated or metallic effects depend on the agreed specification.
Printed or cut vinyl graphicsSuitable windows, walls, sign panels and promotional surfaces. The surface condition, texture, intended duration and removal needs. Floor graphics require a product suited to that application.

Share any preferences for recycled content, material sourcing or future reuse at the start. We can review the available information for the specific product. Read more about our approach to material choices and sustainability.

Illuminated signs: face lit, halo lit or externally lit?

Lighting changes how your sign looks after dark. Face illuminated letters shine through their front surface. Halo illuminated letters cast light behind the letters onto the mounting surface. External lighting lights the sign from outside it rather than from within.

The right effect depends on the logo, letter size, background, viewing position and surrounding light. For halo lighting, the spacing and surface behind the letters influence the result. Tell us whether you have a power supply nearby and when you want the sign illuminated. Controls, access for maintenance and any electrical work should be included in the project discussion.

We can also discuss neon style LED features and lightboxes. If your project includes changing messages or video, explore our LED and digital screen services. For wider interior or feature lighting, see commercial lighting and branded spaces.

Sign fitting and site preparation

A sign needs a fitting plan as well as a design. Send a wide photograph of the building and close ups of the proposed fixing area. Approximate dimensions are useful for an initial discussion; final measurements and site conditions may need checking before production.

  1. Review the location. We discuss the mounting surface, sign height, existing fixings, access and whether an old sign needs removing.
  2. Agree the specification. Confirm the dimensions, materials, finish, lighting and artwork alongside any survey findings.
  3. Plan access and fitting. Working hours, parking, access equipment, site restrictions and any electrical contractor requirements are agreed as part of the scope.
  4. Approve and arrange the work. Artwork and the quotation are approved before the agreed production and installation arrangements go ahead. Removal, disposal, making good and electrical work should be identified explicitly if required.

Tell us about any landlord, building or site approval requirements before the specification is finalised. A quotation does not itself confirm that every permission has been obtained. For programmes across several locations, see our POS installations and retail rollout service.

What artwork should you send?

If you have an original vector logo, send a PDF, SVG or EPS where available. Vector artwork can usually be scaled more cleanly than a small screenshot. A PDF can also contain a low resolution image, so the file extension alone does not guarantee that artwork is ready for production.

The enquiry form accepts one JPG, PNG or PDF up to 10 MB. For SVG, EPS, multiple photos or larger files, include a file sharing link in your project details or contact us to arrange delivery. Please only share artwork you are authorised to use.

What affects a signage quotation?

There is no single price that suits every shop sign. Two signs with the same overall width can have very different constructions and fitting requirements. Your quotation is based on the agreed design and scope.

A clear brief helps us quote more efficiently. If you have a budget range, share it so we can discuss a suitable specification. Production and fitting dates are confirmed for the individual project rather than assumed from the enquiry date.

Request a signage quotation

Send your town or postcode, site photos, approximate width and height, quantity, logo or artwork, preferred finish and target date. Let us know whether you need illumination and fitting, and anything you already know about access or existing signs.

Based in Wakefield, we welcome signage enquiries from West Yorkshire and across the UK. We will review your requirements and confirm the proposed scope, specification and project arrangements.

Your signage questions answered

Can you replace an existing shop sign?

Yes. Send photos of the current sign and frontage, approximate measurements and your artwork. We will review removal, the fixing surface, access and any illumination requirements before confirming the scope.

Do I need exact dimensions before enquiring?

No. Approximate measurements with clear units and photographs are enough to start a discussion. A survey or further checks may be needed to confirm the final specification before production.

Can you quote if I am unsure which material to choose?

Yes. Tell us where the sign will go, the look you want, whether it needs lighting and your budget if known. We can discuss suitable options and explain what is included in the proposed specification.

Can you use my existing logo?

Send the original artwork if available, preferably a vector PDF, SVG or EPS. We will review its suitability. If you only have a screenshot or small image, tell us so any artwork preparation can be discussed.

How long will my sign take?

Timing depends on the design, materials, artwork approval, site checks and fitting arrangements. Include any fixed opening or launch date in your enquiry so we can review it before confirming a schedule.
